Keeping Up with Color Trends with Variform Vinyl Siding and Ply Gem Accents and Accessories

The Variform brand of vinyl siding offers tried and true solutions for pros, with a comprehensive offering of vinyl siding and accessory solutions that work seamlessly together to transform the home exterior. Variform offers a curated range of vinyl siding options, including trending styles, profiles and an array of colors, specifically tailored to meet the needs and preferences of today’s homeowners. What’s even better, all Variform collections seamlessly integrate with Ply Gem shutters, accessories and accents, offering a streamlined option for completely coordinated exteriors. Even with all of these options, it can be hard for homeowners to know what colors go well together or to visualize the final product on different architectural styles. Below is a resource to share with homeowners struggling to step out of the box with their design and to help them meet current color trends. The Palettes The Sherwin-Williams 2024 color trend report – Anthology: Volume One – broke down trending colors in four categories. Blues and greens, reds and purples, deeps and darks, and delicate tints. As a leader in color, these trends extend far beyond interior paint choices and can be used to inform exterior color palettes, as well. Blues and greens The garage door on this 70s-style house demands attention; while the combination of inconsistent detail elements prevent it from claiming a true style. Adjusting siding profiles, incorporating cool blue siding and adding a brick entrance column offsets the large garage door and brings balance to the look of this house. (Variform Vortex Extreme Siding in Savannah Blue, Variform Board + Batten Siding in Silver Mist, Variform Fascia and Soffit in Sandy Tan) The overall look of this home is unified through its use of complementing stone and siding colors. The natural green hues offset each other enough to provide visual interest while maintaining a cohesive and subtle look that compliments the surroundings. (Variform Vortex Extreme and Board + Batten Siding in Irish Thistle, Variform Heritage Cedar in Spanish Olive, Variform Fascia and Soffit in Dover White, Ply Gem Stone Shadow Ledgestone) While it lacks discernible style and detail, the primary challenge with this home is the scale and balance of its components — such as the disproportionately large half-round window. Simply adding accessory details to the gables and mixing siding styles assigns character and helps this newly created Victorian exterior to extend a warm welcome to guests. Keeping the siding tones muted with these grey-green tones allows the trim details to stand out. (Variform Board + Batten and Heritage Cedar Siding in Flint, Variform Fascia and Soffit in Dover White, Ply Gem Stone Brick) By adding two gables to the roofline and a front porch, this house is thoroughly transformed. Incorporating a cool neutral color palette in various textures and tapered column bases completes the Craftsman style. (Variform Heritage Cedar in Spanish Olive, Variform Board + Batten in Irish Thistle, Variform Fascia and Soffit in Dover White, Ply Gem Stone Shadow Ledgestone) Reds and Purples A mix of colors and siding profiles completely transform this once forgettable-looking home into an enviable Craftsman. The addition of stone columns, along with a railing application, creates a stylish front porch. The red accent siding and front door paired with neutral primary siding and trim creates an inviting and warm exterior. (Variform Vortex Extreme in Stone Mountain Clay, Variform Heritage Cedar in Sedona Red, Variform Soffit and Fascia in Briarwood, Ply Gem Railing in Khaki, Ply Gem Stone Ridgestone) Simple structural enhancements and a pop of maroon in the shutters can have a dramatic effect. A front porch extends a welcome entry, while a second-story gable breaks up the roofline on this boxy 70s Colonial. Siding materials, windows, shutters and colors work together to create an eye-catching result. (Variform Heritage Cedar Twilight Shadow, Variform Soffit and Fascia in Dover White, Ply Gem Raised Panel Shutters in Winestone, Ply Gem Shadow Ledgestone) Or, go bold. This red works perfectly to vividly change the personality of this Colonial home with red siding and elaborately-trimmed windows and front door. The finished look is perfect for making a statement while keeping the classic charm of the home style. (Variform Vortex Extreme in Sedona Red, Variform Soffit and Fascia in Dover White, Ply Gem Trim and Mouldings Window,  Door Surround and Garage Moulding) Deeps and Darks The addition of a gable over the entry incorporates the porch into the main body of the house, while the stone delivers a vintage façade. The dark, shingle-style siding helps enhance the architecture and blend with its natural surroundings. (Variform Heritage Cedar in Teak, Variform Soffit and Fascia in Dover White, Ply Gem Stone in Shadow Ledgestone, Ply Gem Railing in White) The newly added gables play a role in the transformation of this house. Then through color, as well as pairing stone with board and batten siding and shutters, this beautiful exterior has become a model for others in the neighborhood. Sometimes, adding deep and dark colors can be through simple additions like accent siding or shutters. (Variform Board + Batten in Flint, Variform Vortex Extreme in Pewter, Variform Soffit and Fascia in Dover White, Ply Gem Board + Batten 3-Board Open Shutters in Black, Ply Gem Stone Cut Cobblestone) Delicate Tints By celebrating its geometric shapes with window and door patterns, new chimney stone and a combination of horizontal and vertical siding, this house achieves a more modernized style. The selection of light tones helps to soften the sharp angles of this home. (Variform Vortex Extreme in Sage, Variform Board + Batten in Natural Almond, Variform Soffit and Fascia in Dover White, Ply Gem Shadow Ledgestone) This monochromatic “challenge” with plain windows and no sense of entry, lacks balance and is overwhelmed by the garage and its gables. Two different, yet color-coordinated siding profiles give this house an architecturally interesting look, while the addition of black windows with prairie grids enhances its character. (Variform Board + Batten in Sandy Tan, Variform Vortex Extreme in Stone Mountain Clay, Variform Soffit and Fascia in Island Pearl) This once Modern house is severely outdated and its overall appearance is lacking in warmth. The lack of windows and odd proportions present a visual challenge. To help bring balance, louvered vents were added as accents to either side of the new upper-level windows. Then, by also adding brick to the base of the house, Prairie-style architecture is introduced. (Variform Climaforce in Silver Mist, Variform Contractor's Choice in Natural Almond, Ply Gem Stone Thin Brick) The Ply Gem portfolio of brands offers homeowners and their contractors the opportunity to update nearly any style of home – no matter how outdated – to follow current trends and be an outward expression of personal style. How to Talk to Homeowners About the Sustainability of Vinyl Siding

Sustainable Building, Variform. Siding that Withstands

How to Talk to Homeowners About the Sustainability of Vinyl Siding

From reusable food storage bags and plant-based sneakers to electric cars and battery-powered lawnmowers, many consumers are changing their purchase decisions to fulfill a desire for products that have a lower carbon footprint and a more durable life span. In fact, a recent survey from Nielsen IQ showed that 78% of consumers say a sustainable lifestyle is important to them. That ethos extends to the materials used on their home, which makes it essential for homebuilders and exterior contractors to be prepared to answer questions about the sustainability of vinyl siding. Measuring the Life Cycle Impact of Vinyl Siding The Vinyl Siding Institute’s Sustainability Working Group commissioned a life cycle analysis of vinyl siding using Building for Environmental and Economic Sustainability software. BEES measures the environmental performance of building products by assessing every stage in the product’s life, including raw materials, manufacturing processes, transportation, installation, use, recycling and waste. The results of the analysis revealed vinyl siding has 40% less impact on global warming than fiber cement and 83% less impact than brick and mortar. 5 Eco-Friendly Features of Vinyl Siding Lightweight: Transporting vinyl siding takes less fuel because it is significantly lighter than brick and fiber cement. Long-lasting: Vinyl siding is durable and lasts multiple generations. For example, the warranty on Variform® by Ply Gem® is 50 years from the installation date. Low-maintenance: Vinyl siding does not need to be painted, stained or caulked. Manufactured efficiently: Vinyl manufacturing requires less water, energy and raw materials than fiber cement or brick and mortar. Plus, scrap generated during manufacturing can be reintroduced into the manufacturing stream, resulting in low waste. Recyclable: Vinyl siding is made of thermoplastic that can be ground up and recycled indefinitely into decking, piping, flooring and new vinyl siding. This feature helps reduce landfill waste — in fact, 1 billion pounds of vinyl are recycled in the U.S. and Canada annually. Consumers who want to lower their carbon footprint may choose to have a new construction home adhere to a green building program. Building homes to green program specifications is also a good way for builders to tout their eco-friendly credentials. Vinyl siding as a category of home exterior cladding can contribute to points in the following green building programs: Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design National Green Building Standard California Green Building Standards Code Vinyl Siding Stands the Test of Time Because vinyl is a type of plastic, misperceptions persist that vinyl siding isn’t a resilient building material. But, as noted above, vinyl siding such as Variform by Ply Gem offers a tried-and-true solution created using a low-waste manufacturing process. The siding is designed to last a lifetime with little to no maintenance and comes with a 50-year warranty. Variform vinyl siding is timeless and trending, making it the ideal choice to fit a wide variety of home styles. Collections include: American Herald: Get the look of sawed wood without the upkeep. Ashton Heights: A subtle wood grain finish brings a traditional painted wood appearance without the hassle of having to paint. Contractor’s Choice: The brushed cedar finish provides the perfect balance of value and quality that holds strong against the elements. Victoria Harbor: A satin finish and beaded edge evoke old-world charm and elegance in a durable design that resists high winds and dents. Board & Batten: A combination of wide and narrow boards installed vertically looks like painted wood for a distinctive accent that’s durable enough to withstand up to 176 mph winds. Heritage Cedar: These are available in shingle and round-cut styles to add the natural charm of real cedar without the maintenance. HGTV Stars Dave and Jenny Marrs Are Growing a Greener Future with Help from Mastic®

"For us, it’s not just about the here and now — it’s about building and remodeling homes that will stand the test of time and help leave a positive impact on future generations" For home renovators and HGTV stars Dave and Jenny Marrs, sustainability is more than a buzzword; it’s a way of life. From their own family garden where they compost soil and harvest seasonal vegetables to their community-focused project, The Berry Farm, Dave and Jenny practice what they preach. They carry this ethos into their renovation projects by using sustainable building products, including Mastic® vinyl siding and accessories, to create a greener future. A Smaller Carbon Footprint From Manufacturing to Installation According to the Vinyl Siding Institute, vinyl siding is more efficient and has 40% less impact on global warming than fiber cement and 83% less impact on the environment than brick and mortar.(1) Vinyl Siding is a Sustainable Building Material The manufacturing of vinyl siding is designed with sustainability in mind. It requires minimal raw materials to manufacture, which reduces resource extraction and contributes less to deforestation and resource depletion compared to materials like wood or fiber cement. Its lightweight construction means fewer resources are needed for transportation and installation, reducing the overall carbon footprint of the product. Vinyl Siding Produces Less Waste Vinyl siding also produces less waste during on-site installation compared to wood, brick and mortar, or fiber cement. And because vinyl siding is recyclable, any scrap left over can be given new life. Mastic siding participates in the Vinyl Siding Institute’s recycling program to use scrap vinyl from house demolitions as source material in new vinyl siding. In 2022, this cooperative, along with other building exterior manufacturers, generated more than 40 tons of recycled vinyl scrap, keeping it out of landfills and reducing the need for new plastic raw materials to manufacture new vinyl siding. Vinyl Siding is More Durable The durability of vinyl siding reduces the need for frequent maintenance, meaning fewer resources are needed to keep the siding in good condition. For instance, unlike traditional wood siding, vinyl siding doesn’t require yearly painting to keep up its appearance. This results in fewer volatile organic compounds released into the environment, helping to reduce air pollution. And without the extra maintenance, homeowners can see savings add up year after year, making it not only an environmentally sustainable choice but also an economical one. “For us, it’s not just about the here and now — it’s about building and remodeling homes that will stand the test of time and help leave a positive impact on future generations,” said Jenny, the creative backbone of the duo. Dave echoes the sentiment. “We want to think bigger than the job site and consider what happens after the build is over,” he said. “Can the scrap from our remodel be recycled so it stays out of the landfill? Are we helping the environment by using products that can deliver a lifetime of energy efficiency? With Mastic vinyl siding, the answer is yes.” Mastic Insulated Vinyl Siding Improves Energy Efficiency Insulated vinyl siding, such as the Mastic Structure® Home Insulation System™ Siding that Dave and Jenny have used on remodels, enhances energy efficiency in homes. The high-performance foam backing wraps a home in a continuous blanket of insulation, reducing energy consumption and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. “Jenny and I have installed Mastic Structure® vinyl siding on a few remodel projects, and not only is it easy to install but also the quality, low maintenance, energy savings and curb appeal it brings to homeowners is unparalleled,” says Dave. An Easy Choice for Positive Environmental Impact Dave and Jenny Marrs’ choice of Mastic vinyl siding for their home remodels is a testament to their commitment to sustainable living and design. The reduced environmental impact, durability, energy efficiency and low maintenance of vinyl siding make it a long-lasting, sustainable and affordable alternative to other exterior cladding materials. As homeowners themselves, the Marrs family sets a positive example by choosing materials that benefit not only their home and the homes they build and remodel but also the planet, leaving a legacy for future generations to appreciate and enjoy. “Jenny and I are advocates for sustainability, but we realize the idea of sustainable living can be overwhelming,” Dave said. “Making one choice at a time, no matter how big or small, makes a positive impact on our environment.” 1 “Vinyl Siding: Reducing Our Carbon Footprint,” Vinyl Siding Institute, accessed October 31, 2023.
