FAQs

Looking for Help Choosing the Right Windows?

Ply Gem windows utilize a multi-pronged approach to thermal performance and air infiltration:

  • High-Performance Glass: Our HP2+ and HP2MAX glass packages feature triple-pane units with Low-E coatings and Argon gas fills, significantly reducing radiant heat transfer.
  • Advanced Weatherstripping: We use high-density fin-pile weatherstripping and dual-action bulb seals to create a primary barrier against air leakage.
  • Tight Air Infiltration Ratings: Many of our series, such as the 1500 and 700 series, are engineered to meet or exceed industry standards for air infiltration, ensuring a draft-free interior even in high-wind conditions.

Different window styles serve different purposes. Double hung and single hung windows are popular for everyday ventilation and traditional design. Casement and awning windows can help maximize airflow and are often chosen for harder-to-reach spaces. Sliding windows work well for wider openings. Picture windows are often used where views and natural light matter most. The best choice depends on ventilation needs, room layout, and design preference.

Replacement windows are designed to fit into an existing window opening and are often used when the surrounding frame is still in good condition. New construction windows are installed when building a new home, adding an addition, or replacing windows down to the studs. They include a nailing fin for attachment to the wall structure. The right option depends on the condition of the opening, project scope, and installation goals.

Choosing the right frame type ensures a proper moisture barrier:

  • Nail-Fin Windows: Feature a perimeter flange that is nailed directly to the wall sheathing. This is the gold standard for new construction and “stud-out” remodels because it integrates directly with the home’s weather-resistive barrier (WRB).
  • Retrofit (Z-Bar) Windows: Designed for replacement projects where the existing frame stays in place. The “Z-bar” flange covers the old frame for a clean aesthetic finish without disturbing the exterior siding or stucco.

When comparing windows, common performance ratings include U-factor, Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC), air leakage, and design pressure.

  • U-factor measures how well a window helps keep heat inside.
  • SHGC helps show how much solar heat passes through the glass into the home.
  • Air leakage can help indicate draft resistance.
  • Design pressure can matter in regions with severe weather or higher wind loads.

Reviewing these ratings can help narrow down the right window for your climate and project.

Design Pressure (DP) measures a window’s ability to withstand wind and water. For most residential inland areas, a DP 15 to DP 20 is standard. However:

  • Coastal Requirements: In high-wind zones, we recommend a minimum of DP 50.
  • Ply Gem Solutions: Our 1500 Vinyl CollectionSeries vinyl windows offer configurations rated up to DP 50, providing the structural integrity required for coastal performance without sacrificing energy efficiency.

To meet 2021/2024 IECC requirements, you must verify the U-factor and SHGC (Solar Heat Gain Coefficient) based on your climate zone:

  • Northern Climates: Prioritize a low U-factor (typically ≤ 0.27) to retain heat.
  • Southern Climates: Prioritize a low SHGC (typically ≤ 0.23) to block solar heat.
  • Ply Gem Advantage: Our windows are Energy Star 7.0 certified in many configurations, ensuring compliance with the strictest local building codes across North America.

Yes. For homeowners seeking “Sound Control,” we offer STC (Sound Transmission Class) rated glass packages. By utilizing laminated glass and varied glass thicknesses (dissimilar glass), Ply Gem windows can dampen sound waves, significantly reducing the decibel level of exterior noise compared to standard double-pane windows.
