Windows and Doors, Build Smart
It may seem like a daunting question, but you don’t have to be a contractor to know how to make this decision. We’ve laid out the top six things to look out for:
Are your windows difficult to lift, swing or slide easily? Windows should move fluidly and fit into place easily.
This may sound obvious, but if you feel cold air coming in through your windows, or if the hot sun is making it difficult for the air conditioner to keep your house cool, you might be in need of double- or triple-pane replacement windows. Single-pane windows often leave rooms feeling chilly and dry in cold weather and overheated in warm, sunny weather. Double- and triple-pane glass with Low-e blocks much of the direct sunlight and can greatly improve the comfort of your home.
If condensation regularly collects on your glass, especially if it clouds the view and soaks the window trim, you might need to replace your windows. Keep in mind, a certain amount of condensation is normal, however.
Painted windows require regular maintenance; otherwise they could rot and fall apart. Chipping, deterioration or water stains on the window or the area around the window (inside or out) is a sure sign you’ll need to replace your windows.
If you find it increasingly difficult to clean your old windows, replacement windows might be your answer. Many new windows come with easy-clean or even self-cleaning glass, designed to make cleaning simple.
Storm windows can be a thing of the past with new energy efficient, impact resistant windows.
Check your windows this spring, and consult with a contractor if you suspect your windows need to be replaced.
