Tornado Rebuild in Joplin with Extreme Makeover – The Walters Family

Tom and Emily Walters, with their daughter Chloe, moved into their house in 2006, looking forward to raising a family in the small town of Joplin. Emily, a nurse, and Tom, a teacher and coach, have given their lives to nurturing others. When the tornado hit, the family took shelter in a bathtub and waited for the storm to pass. As soon as it was safe, the couple rushed to a nearby nursing home that had collapsed. Along with others, Tom and Emily helped rescue several people from the rubble. With their own home demolished and the family unable to rebuild, they’ve been living with Emily’s parents.

This young family is a breath of fresh air. They love adventure – including surfing and skating – and Tom’s friends describe him as “eclectic and beachy.” The Walters family would fit well in a coastal town, but they truly love Joplin and want to see it thrive again, so the beach was brought to them through a home that exudes beach town charm, including light yellow shingle siding with white windows and aqua shutters.

Welcome home, Emily, Tom and Chloe!
